By size, Kaiserslautern is the largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. The city in the middle of the Palatinate is characterized by an impressive scientific infrastructure. Among other things, it focuses on key research projects in the field of digitalization. Kaiserslautern is home to the RPTU, the only technical and scientific university in Rhineland-Palatinate. The university has two campuses, one in Kaiserslautern and one in Landau. A total of around 20,000 students are enrolled at the university. A further 6,000 people study at the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern. Moreover, some of the most important research institutions in Germany are located here: the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and two Fraunhofer Institutes for Industrial Mathematics and Experimental Software Engineering. Software that is used in companies, banks and media outlets is developed in Kaiserslautern. For that reason, the city's technical focus plays a significant role in Rhineland-Palatinate’s economy.

For this purpose, the so-called "Park der Pfälzischen Regionalentwicklung", or for short PRE-Park, was developed. Its services are aimed at technology companies from all over the world. The park was designed as a campus in the immediate vicinity of the Technical University. The underlying idea is to combine leisure and technology. Apart from workspace, companies will also have access to leisure activities and housing for employees and their families.
