Types of residence permit
In Germany, the Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz, AufenthG) sets out the legal framework for non-citizens living and working in Rhineland-Palatinate as international skilled workers. In its terminology, an “Aufenthaltstitel” is an authorization to reside in Germany, of which there are several sub-categories. One of these is the “Aufenthaltserlaubnis.” The Aufenthaltserlaubnis is usually issued with an expiration date and is tied to a specific purpose, for example, university studies, an apprenticeship, or employment. If you’re given a temporary residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis), you must renew it before the expiration date so that you can keep working in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Visas are another form of authorization to stay in Germany. If you enter Rhineland-Palatinate on a visa to work here, after you arrive in Germany, in addition to the visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the immigration authority that is responsible for you.
